Bicycle parking is a game changer for the real estate industry.

Bicycle thefts have become an increasingly significant challenge, with an increase of over 15 percent each year. In 2023 alone, over 165 million Norwegian kroner was paid out in compensation for stolen bicycles. The solutions provided by the Norwegian company Bikeloop prevent theft, particularly in public places, shopping centers, outside businesses, and in residential areas.

The demand for office spaces with secure bicycle parking facilities is growing rapidly. Modern bicycle parking solutions that combine security, user-friendliness, and technology have become a key factor for real estate players who wish to attract the tenants of the future. Bikeloop offers innovative systems that cater to the needs of both employees and visitors, with sustainable, reliable, and flexible parking solutions supported by advanced software services that ensure safe bicycle parking.

Racks and hotels do not work

Many of today’s solutions such as racks and bicycle hotels do not work and become pure "candy stores" for criminals. Few want to leave an electric bike, cargo bike, or other bicycle that can cost up to 100 000 kroner in a rack or at a bicycle hotel where several have access. What they are concerned about is that the bike is 100 percent safe and is there when they return. This means that the bike must be kept in a private room that only the cyclist has access to via an intelligent SaaS platform and app.

-Safe bicycle parking is crucial for more people to choose the bicycle as a mode of transport, including to and from the workplace. Today’s standalone bicycle racks and bicycle hotels provide little protection against theft, which makes many reluctant to use expensive bikes. With Bikeloop, we can meet the needs for safe, smart, and simple parking which will be a key factor in the future for attracting and retaining employees, while also promoting sustainable transport solutions and green workplaces, says Hedda Heyerdahl, founder of Bikeloop.

Value creation for developers and real estate developers

Stricter requirements for bicycle parking are already part of the planning and building regulations in Norway, and from 2025 further EU regulations will come into effect. This creates both challenges and opportunities for the real estate industry.

Bikeloop’s solutions provide developers with the flexibility to adapt bicycle parking to the unique needs of the project. Whether it’s about housing cooperatives with limited space or large commercial buildings, Bikeloop ensures tailored solutions that meet the requirements – while also increasing the attractiveness of the property. Their unique SaaS platform allows administrators to customize payment and subscription solutions and has now also included user insights and additional services for cyclists, contributing to increased interest and engagement that helps to boost the percentage of people cycling to work, which is an important part of both health and sustainability initiatives in a company.

In places like Tjuvholmen and Fornebu S, the first rooms are now open to the public in a public area. There, cyclists can park their bikes, and there is also space to store helmets and other bicycle equipment.

Different solutions for different needs

We have developed a number of bicycle parking solutions that meet various needs – from individual rooms to shared parking for companies or housing cooperatives. Our solutions are designed to house everything from regular bicycles to longtails, cargo bikes, and bicycles adapted for persons with disabilities.

-Our goal is to promote bicycle use in urban areas by offering attractive and secure parking options, which aligns with the objectives in the National Transport Plan (NTP) to increase cycling and walking traffic as modes of transport in the local area, says Heyerdahl.

Safe bicycle parking is an important part of modern educational environments

Universities and colleges play a key role in promoting sustainable transport habits among students and staff. Safe bicycle parking on campus helps reduce car traffic, makes everyday life easier for cyclists, and supports the institutions' green profile. Students with limited finances are particularly vulnerable to loss from bicycle theft, and without secure parking options, many may hesitate to choose the bicycle as their daily mode of transport.

The University of Tromsø chose Bikeloop as their provider for bicycle parking for their students and staff.  The choice was made based on their inclusive, intuitive, and easy-to-use systems, while also keeping the bikes dry and safely stored. -For us, it is important that Bikeloop has future-oriented solutions that we want to try out. We want to provide the best possible offering to our students and staff, says Sigurd Salberg Pedersen, Campus Planner at the University of Tromsø.

Bikeloop’s solutions provide both students and staff with the confidence to park their bicycles safely and user-friendly, while also creating a more bicycle-friendly campus, and satisfied students and staff.
