BikeLoop exists because safe, efficient, and operated bicycle parking is lacking in today's cities – despite increased demands, large investments, and clear political goals.

1

Safety is a prerequisite for increased bicycle use

In Norway, bicycle thefts are increasing year by year, while the value of bicycles is rising significantly – particularly driven by e-bikes and cargo bikes. When the bicycle cannot be parked safely, many opt to forego cycling as their everyday transportation. This has been documented as one of the biggest barriers to increased bicycle usage.

The same challenge is repeated in European cities, where over one million bicycle thefts are reported annually. Globally, we see a clear pattern: without secure parking, the transition from cars to bicycles comes to a halt – regardless of how good the bike paths are.

2

The authorities set requirements – but today's solutions are inadequate.

In Norway, the parking standards have changed: the requirements for bicycle parking in new residential and commercial projects have been tightened and are actively used in planning and building cases. Nevertheless, bicycle parking is often addressed late in the process, with space-consuming and poorly functional solutions.

In the EU, more and more cities are introducing binding minimum requirements for bicycle parking, often combined with requirements for quality, accessibility, and safety. Globally, we see the same development – bicycle parking is increasingly regulated as a necessary part of the building's mobility solution.

3

The bike market is growing – and the expectations are following along.

In Norway, more people are investing in bicycles that replace cars in everyday life. In the EU, the bicycle market is worth tens of billions of euros and is growing rapidly, especially in electric bicycles. Globally, bicycles are expected to take on an increasingly important role in urban transportation systems.

With higher value bicycles come higher expectations for secure storage. Traditional bicycle parking – open racks, dark basements, and cluttered sheds – is not suited to this development.

4

Space is a scarce resource – parking must become smarter

In urban areas, land is one of the most valuable resources. Nonetheless, bicycle parking is often space-inefficient and poorly integrated into the function of the building or public space.

This applies both in Norwegian cities, in the EU, and globally: without well-thought-out solutions, bicycle parking competes with other important uses – and often loses.

5

Billions are being invested in bicycles – parking is the bottleneck

Norway and the EU are investing significant amounts in bike lanes, car-free streets, and green mobility. Globally, cycling is highlighted as a key tool for climate, health, and urban life.

But without good parking, the effect of these investments is reduced. The travel chain is broken where the bike is left.

"Bicycle parking must function as well as the rest of the mobility system. That is why we provide solutions that reduce theft, meet requirements, use space more intelligently, and can be scaled with new services over time. Bikeloop is infrastructure for the mobility of the future."

It started with an orange container...

Bikeloop was established in 2021, inspired by the Havnepromenade in Oslo, where the Oslo municipality had placed 14 orange containers to mark the path along the one-kilometer-long walking stretch by the waterfront. Founder Hedda Heyerdahl came up with the idea of making these empty containers more functional by transforming them into smart bike parking facilities. Two years later, the first Bikeloop was ready. In collaboration with Bærum municipality and their Smart City program, the first Bikeloop HUB was launched at Kadettangen in Sandvika.
